What is Autonomic Dysreflexia?

Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that affects individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) at or above the sixth thoracic vertebra (T6). It involves an overactive response of the autonomic nervous system to various triggers, including a full bladder, bowel distension, or pain.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Rapid increase in BP

  • Sweating

  • Headache

  • Flushed

  • Tight chest

  • Blurred vision

What to do when experiencing symptoms:

  • Sit up, seek assistance if needed, with feet on floor

  • Check for an irritant such as a kinked catheter, pressure sore, tight clothing, etc.

  • Remove irritant if possible

  • Monitor BP throughout

  • If cause is unknown and BP does not lower, nifedipine can be provided if available and cleared by physician

  • Call 911 if symptoms persist
